Desserts
My new husband (1970) Morgan asked “what’s for dessert?” after eating our first meal together under one roof, as Husband and Wife. I thought he must be kidding. We just had a super meal, why would he need dessert?
As, I grow up dessert was for Thanksgiving, or because we were on vacation. We would have fruit for our dessert, most of the time. My Mar (Mom) loved ice cream, so we did have that in the summer a lot. Fresh homemade peach that Mar and Weto (Grandpa) would make some hot summer nights. My Mar would make up the custard and Weto would churn what seemed like hours as we waited. My Mar also made Pineapple up-side cake, and the Best bread pudding in the world, some of the recipes in these book are variations of Mars. But, this sort of thing was not an every night right after dinner thing.
So my new Husband told me to get a pencil and paper and call his Mother, (in this book you will find her as Inez, Great Grandma Weast, or Grandma Weast). She was Scandinavian, and grew up on a farm in Nebraska. She baked every single day of the week. She made Pineapple Danish, and Hot Crossed Buns, for breakfast, cookies for Morgan’s lunch. And Fresh Fruit pies, Cream pies or cakes for dessert after every dinner. So, at the age of 22 I was going to learn how to be a baker, I had baked some by this point but, nothing like my Dear Inez (one of my Baking Jedi Masters). Many of these recipes are variations of My Dear Sweet Mother-in-law Inez. Some of these recipes also come from Morgan’s Grandmother (Great-Great Grandma Weast) who was a wee Scottish woman with eyes so dark they looked black, she was also a baker, and a candy maker and some of her recipes are here too.
Of course I was much, much, much thinner way back then. But, I can say I spent 25 years learning what the Weast women had to teach.
My Mar was a Dear too, she was a gourmet cook, and there was really not much she could not cook. So, I really had the Best of both worlds. Two of the Best teachers a young wife could have. I LOVE You Both I know my Mar is cooking something great in Heaven and Inez is also in Heaven making the dessert for it.

Heaven on earth...
