Fresh Fruit Kebabs in Watermelon
Perfect centerpiece for a brunch, buffet, garden party. This picture is from our annual Fourth of July block party I started the first summer we moved here.
You will need:
Big Grapes, red, & green
a clean fruit only cutting board
a big platter
Cut the watermelon in half horizontally, turn one half upside down on platter. With a sharp knife, slice the watermelon, as if to serve. But, now cut into cubes, not to small, and set aside.
Next twist the top off the pineapple, cut the bottom, and top off and discard. Stand the pineapple upright, and slice from top to bottom just beneath the skin all the way round, discard skin. Now lay pineapple on side, and carefully cut into 3/4 to 1-inch disks. Cut each disk into 5 or 6 pieces (like a pizza), and set aside.
Wash all strawberries, keep the green on them, it is eatable, and add a pretty touch. Add a 1/2 cup white vinegar in a sink of cold water for 15 minutes, and then place on clean dish towel to air dry.
Do the same with grapes, or any other *fruit with eatable skin.
Slice the Cantaloupe, and Honeydew, and then cut into wedges, and set aside.
Now the Fun starts, the watermelon half is your blank canvas. You can build your Kebabs one by one and place them on your watermelon, or build a few and then place them around your watermelon. There is only one rule I like to keep here, always start all around the bottom, and work your way up to the top. I like to mix up my kebabs, one time I’ll start my skewer with pineapple, and end with a strawberry, and make up several of those. Next I might put a honeydew on the bottom and watermelon on top, again make up several. Just make sure all fruit is equally represented. And remember just have Fun!
* Sometimes I use pears, star fruit, apples, berries, apricots, or figs.
